THE GALE.
The easterly gale, which has been blowing for the past three days, has, so far, as we can learn, not done any harm in the district. In the Auckland harbour, however, the ferry boats had great difficulty in crossing, but fortunately no mishap befel them. The s.s. Waihora encountered the full force of the gale and was 37£ hours steaming from the Three Kings to Auckland, and when she arrived it was blowing so hard and such a heavy sea was running that the captain was unable to berth her at the Queeustreet wharf. Several vessels dragged their anchors in the harbour, but the ouly damage was that one of them carried away the cable from Ponsonby to Northeote. The tug boat Sterling is ashore at Kaipara Heads, and the scow Ghost is ashore at the southern side of Coromandel harbour. Several of the coasting steamers were delayed, having been compelled to seek shelter or remain in port. Several houses have been unroofed at Paeroa, and fences and outhouses blown down.
