WELLINGTON NEWS.

(by telegraph.—press association)

Wellington, Last Night. The Governor left for Christchurch this afternoon to attend the Grand National Meeting. Dr. Newman, ex-M.H.R., announces his candidature for the Wellington Suburbs seat at the general eleotion. Captain Edwin predicts an easterly gale with heavy rains, probably floods, after twenty-four hours. The licensee of the Wellington Hotel was fined £5 and costs £2 12s Gd for supplying a Maori woman with liquor. For the defence the point was raised that a woman married to a European is exempt, and in this case the woman was married to a half-caste and the Act did not apply. The S.M. ruled that for the purposes of the Act a half-caste was the 6ame as a Maori, Notice of appeal was given.
