AUCKLAND NEWS.

(BT TBLKOBIPH.—PBESB ASSOOUTIOH). Auckland, Last Night. The Steeplechaser Mangere was brought over from Sydney in the Westrali* today. The Bratska Sloga, an Austrian paper, has been started in Auckland, and is the first paper in the Croatian language published in New Zealand. It was published to-day, and is intended to cater for the numerous Austrians in the Auckland province. The Commission appointed to examine into all the matters relating to the eonduct of St. John's College, Auckland, including its endowments and scholarships, met in private at the Diocesan Synod office to-day. The proceedings are not open to the Press. The committee consists of Dr. Wallis (Bishop of Wellington) and Dr. W. F. Pennefather. The barques A'cestes and Neptune both report encountering heavy weather in the Tasman Sea. The mail steamer Alameda is waiting for the southern 'Frisco mails, and expects to get away at 10 o'clock tonight. As the Elingamite, which arrived this morning, was uuable to work cargo at Napier and Cisborne, the oargo, 110 cons, was brought on to Auckland and transhipped into the Weetralia for those ports. Included in the passengers joining the Alameda at this port are Vlrs Chambers, wife of the Chief Ju-<t : ce of Samoa, with her son and daughter, who are returning to Apia, and Mr A D "uy, of Dunbarton. who retunn to England by the vessel.
