WELLINGTON NEWS.
(by telegraph. —peess association). Wellington, Last Night. Mr McKay, the Government geologist who was commissioned to explore the country eastward of Mokau for coal, has been prevented by the season of the year from making a thorough search. He obtained some specimens similar to the Mokau coal, and recommends that a party should be sent out next summer. The return supplied to the Education Board shows that some of the city schools are overcrowded, while others have spare accommodation. Taken altogether, the average attendance is below the room provided. The Chairman said in actual practice there wae no evercrowding, to which exception was taken by one member, who said that the Inspector's reports told a different tale. The matter then dropped without the Board taking any action. Mr Blair was re-elected chairman, & position which he has held for 17 years. The settlers are experiencing a remarkably eood season in the Wellington district. Feed is plentiful and crops are looking well. A prominent colonist, who has lived nearly all his life in New Zealand, thinks there never has been so good a year, and attributes it mostly to the expansion of the dairy industry.
