Hicks-Beach, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said the exemption of colonial wines would involve on present consumption a loss of £20,000 yearly. He feared the preferential treatment of colonial wines would result in foreign wines being shipped to the colonies and re-exported to Britain, thus largely increasing the loss.
Sir M. Hicks-Beach will receive a deputation of Agents-General on ( .the subject of colonial vrine duties next Tuesday.
