ATTEMPTED MURDER.
(by telegraph—pbess association). Wellington, Last Night. A man named J. Daines has been arrested at Rltham on a charge of attempting to murder his wife. Later. Further particulars of the Dames assault show that one attack was made with a knite, there being a terrible gash on the sida of the woman's face down into the neck, but the face is also bruised and broken in a way which leads to the supposition that she was also struck with a blunt instrument. There ar3 several stabs ou the face, and as far down as the breast, so that her assailant must have kept at his work for some time. Daines, who is a ve»y dark man, speaks in a broken sort of way. He has been about Eltham district for some years. It is understood that Daines and his wife did not live on the best of terms, and evidently there had been a quarrel on Thursday ; but of this no particulars are available. Though the woman is still alive, she is in a precarious condition. There is a family, but several members are grown up. In her depoai ions Mrs Daines charged her husband with the assault.
