TE AWAMUTU.
School. reports mi the local school as follows :—Suitability of time-tables. Suitable in Standard VI. to Standard 11. The teacher of Classes I. and Primers does not appear to use a time-tabic. Standard IV. : Remarks ou the methods and quality of the instruction in general or in detail:—The quality of the instruction in classes Standard VI. to Standard IV. is moderate. The teaching is too discursive ; meanings of words, grammar, history and geography were all touched on during the course of one brief reading lesson. The efforts of the teacher are not met by corresponding effort ou the part of the pupils ; nor is the teaching driven home by due attention to the written work which is for the most part very carelessly done. Much of the writing in the home work books, the copybooks and on slates in this division is distinctly bad. The pupil teacher is earnest and diligent, but she requires better direction in her work. Her pupils read, but moderately ; their oral answers are too brief and indistinctly delivered ; their written work is marked by carelessness. Classes Standard I. and Primers appear to be well-manuged and skillfully taught, while in this division pupils should be trained to read and speak loudly and distinctly. In classes Standard VI. to Standard 11. the discipline i 3 too lax ; much time is wasted by pupils engaged in silent work, talking and comparing work goes on among thosa doing arithmetic. There seems to bo but a poor spirit of work in these classes, Good in Standard I, aud Primers. Supervision iu recess satisfactory. Manners and general behaviour of the pupils satisfactory. A. large number of pupils do not attend school punctually. One pupil who did not arrive till 11.30 a.m. was marked present.
Closing Houks.—A movement is being made between the local storekeepers to close their respective establishments at 7 o'clock every evening excepting on Saturdays, to commence on Ist April.— (Oun Coriespoudeut).
