THE RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
(by telegraph.—press association). Christchctrch, Tuesday. In the Magistrate's Court this morning, Charles Henry Carter, engine-driver, was charged with manslaughter, in having, on March 11. at South Rakaia, caused the -Jeath of Rose Florence Harwood, Mary Ann Franks, Richard Bowden, and Francis Evelyn Jones. Accused was remanded till March 29. Bail was allowed accused, viz., £2OO in two sureties of £IOO each. Bail was forthcoming and accused was released. Wellington, Tuesday. Since the Rakaia accident the officers of the Railway Department have been making a round of the sufferers, ascertaining their injuries, and providing for pressing needs in the direction of medical attendance and advancing sums of money. Every endeavour is being made to minimise the sufferings of the victims.
