HAMILTON WEST SCHOOL PICNIC
On Thursday the children attending the Hamilton West School, their parents and friends were favoured with a very pleasent day for the school annual picnic, which was held at Beerescourt, the residence of Mr Rushbrook. Several members of the committee and the teachers did in all their power to make the affair a success and they succeeded. The management had ample funds to carry out the programme, the children having collected £9, and there was £5 in hand the proceeds of the school concert. Numerous suitable prizes were provided, and there was an abundance of provisions. A lengthy programme of varied competitions was got through during the day, many of which excited considerable iuterest in the children. Space will not allow of our giving all the details, so we must content ourselves with giving the results of the principal contests. School Championship.—C. Devery, 1; W. Smith, 2 ; E. Stokes, 3. N. Hyde ran close up for fourth place. High Jump.—W. Smith, 1; F. Mnnro, 2. Steeplechase.—Stokes, I; Harwood, 2 ; King, 3. Sack Race.—W. Edwards, 1; F. Munro, 2. Throwing Cricket Ball.—W. Crawley, 1. Long Drop Kick (football).—F. Bond, 1. All-fours.—Fred Bond, 1 ; Frank Bond, 2. Three-legged Race.—Devery and Kirk, I. Boys over 14 years.—Smith, 1; Crawley, 2 ; Devery, 3. Girls' Championship.—J. Crawley, 1 ; M. Thompson, 2 ; I. Cussen, 3. Girls 13 and over.—L. Moore, 1 ; A. Evans, 2. Three-lagged Race.—J. Cussen and J. Hill, 1 ; M. King and E. Hargood, 2. Needle and Thread Race.—W. Waite (threaded by A. Bennett), 1; C. Devery (threaded by J. Crawley), 2. Blindfold Race.—o. Graham and J. Crawley, 1; J. Cussen and J. Hill, 2. Skipping (big girls).—A. Beunett, 1; I. Thompson, 2. Skipping (small girls).—M. Bettley, 1; A. Hill, 2. Open Race.—J. Cussen, 1; J. Hill, 2. MrPurdie, the headmaster, gave out the prizes, and spoke a few words of encouragement to each of the competitors. Addressing the assemblage, he said he hoped that all the children had thoroughly enjoyed themselves. (Yes, yes). The success was due largely to their energy in getting up the concert. They were much indebted to their teachers, Miss Gillespie, Miss Harwood Dean. He concluded by calling cheers for them and for Mr J. A. Young, who had shown such great interest in the affair. These were heartily given. After tea the assemblage broke up, but before doing so, the usual acknowledgements were given to Mr White, the Secretary of the Committee, for his exertions, and to Mr Rushbrook for the use of his paddock.
