THE JONES SCANDAL.
Thk following letter has beeu writteu to Captain Jones :—"Marine Department, Wellington, February 22nd,1899.—5ir, A certificate of competency as home trade-master, No. 5407, dated July 20th, 1897, has been issued to you by this Department, and as it has come to the knowledge of the Government that you have obtained such certificate without sufficient qualifications, and in a manner which renders the same illegal, I am directed by the Minister having charge oj the Mariue Department, to call upon you to deliver the said certificate to me within seven days from this date, with a view to having the same cancelled. Failing your compliance with this request, I am directed to say that the Minister will cause such further steps to be taken as he may be advised.—l have, etc., \V. T. Glasgow, Secretary." In reply to this letter, Captain Jones waited upon Mr Glasgow, aud after informing that gentleman that he failed to see why the Department should have made such a demand, the Captain informed the secretary that he had no iucention of giving up his certificate.
