PIRONGIA.
Volunteers.—The Pirongia troop of the Waikato Mounted Rifles No. 2 were inspected here yesterday (Wednesday) by Col. Banks and Adjutant Grant. Considering the short notice given of the parade and the unsuitable time, there were a fair number present, viz., three officers, 31 noncommissione 1 officers and volunteers, the absentees being accounted for by the exigences of the harvest season, and a fine day just now is a hard thing to sacrifice. Two hours mounted drill and foot drill in the evening were satisfactorily goue through, and on Thursday tiring practice at the butts. Harvesting.—The three fine days we have had here and are now experiencing is being taken advantage of by our farmers to cut their crops, and the machines are busy ill all directions. The grasshoppers in many portions of the district are causing loss of grain.—(Own Correspondent).
