The French Minister at Pekin has informed the Chinese Government that pending further efforts to secure the release of the French missionary captured by tho Szu-chuan rebels, a respite has been granted in regard to the recent threatened invasion, but unless the missionary is released within a few days the threat will be carried out. December 17. The viceroy of the province of Kisug Hu, at the instance of Sir Claude Macdonald, has agreed to a cosmopolitan settlement at Shanghai, and has refused an extension of exclusively French concessions. London, December 18. M. Tatischeff, the Assistant Finance Minister of Russia, speaking in London, said Russia appreciated England’s open-door policy, and would reciprocate when the commercial treaty with Germany expired in 1901, if British merchants would indicate their requirements.
