THE CHINESE QUESTION
FRENCH CLAIMS. CHINA PREPARING TO RESIST. [CNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.] (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. COPYRIGHT.) (Received December 7, 12.40 p.m.). Shanghai, December 6. In July last a serious conflict took place at Shanghai between a body of French marines and the members of the Ningpo Guild, a society formed to look after the interests of many thousands of Chinese, who have been attracted from the neighbouring town of Ning-po. The conflict was the outcome of the Chinese Government refusing to deliver up certain lands, including the Ning-pc Joss House and cemetery, which the French claim to belong to their settlement at Shanghai. France offered a monetary compensation and a new site for the Joss House aud cemetery, but this was refused. France now demands a valuable territory in the Valley as compensation for the non-recogni-tion of her claims to the land in Shanghai. Lion Kounzi, the Viceroy of the Nankin Province, has refused to accede to the French demands and is preparing to resist.
