RAGLAN.

S.S. Kanieri.—This steamer, whose arrival had been anxiously looked tor during the most of last week, came to the wharf ab noon on Saturday last. She had been unfortunately fixed on a spit at the North Head since the previous Tuesday, getting-off on Friday with apparently not much damage judging by the way she steamed up the harbour. Whilst aground at Aotea most fortunately very fine weather prevailed. Right glad were we all to see our local steamer with the genial captain and her crew. The cargo, which wes discharged, received no damage. It is said that a few rivets are loose. Before her arrival stores and private houses had run short of flour, sugar, and other requisites. Q'he Aotea Harbour is a difficult one to enter at any time, especially at low tides. It is most creditable to the officers in charge of the Northern Company's boats running on this coast for the careful manner in which their vessels are handled and the few accidents that occur, especially as the ports on this coast all have bar harbours and are difficult at times to negotiate owing to the channels shifting, to say nothing of the boisterous westerly winds, sometimes gales, experienced on the coast. Contracts.—The County Council are to be commende'd for pushing on their contracts so early in the season whilst fine weather prevails. Fruit.—The late continued wet ■weather seems to have had an unfavourable effect on many orchards. Peaches seem to be much affected, and in some places have suffered much from curl and other diseases, the fruit even when well formed having dropped off, some trees being bare of leaves. Apples and plums are looking better.—(Own Correspondent).
