PIRONGIA.
Native Lands.—The survey of the lands bought from the natives by the Government is now being carried on most energetically, there being no less than nine parties of surveyors employed at that work in the King Country, some roading the blocks and others cutting it up into various-sized acreage for settlement. I am credibly informed that the Government will have some 80,000 acres of land surveyed, ready for sale, by the end of the present year, if they are disposed to open it up for selection. The lands consist of the Hauturu aDd other blocks south and west of it, comiug out on the Kawhia river, and consisting principally of heavy mixed bush. Volunteers.—The No. 2 Company of the Waikato Mounted Rifles are making good progress with their drill under the instruction of Capt. Coleman. Drill takes place daily, morning and afternoon, in Mr Stokes' paddock, and Mrs Finch, of the Alexandra Hotel, has contracted for messing the men during the week's drill. The officers and men are under deep obligation to Mr S. Harker, ot Hamilton," who has most generously given the corps a silver cup to be fired for, thus greatly encouraging the members to take every opportunity to make themselves good shots and a danger to the enemy if ever called upon to defend their country.—(Own Correspondent).
