CABLE SUMMARY.

The Transvaal Government is actively pushing on the operations against the natives who, have revolted in the Northern districts of the Transvaal under chief Mpefu. The Boers have captured Mpefu's stronghold on the hills. The following dates have been fixed for the Australian v. England cricket test matches :—Nottingham, June 1 ; Lords, June 15 ; Leeds, June 29 ; Manchester, July 14 ; Oval, August 14. The following honours have been conferred in connection with the Soudan empaign :—Lord, Sir Herbert Kitchener ; Major General, Sir F. Grenfell ; Knight of the Grand Cross of the Ordsr of Bath, Lieut-Co'onel Wingate ; Director of Military Intelligence in the Egyptian Army, Slatin Pasha ; Knights Commander of St. Michael and St. George, Captain Vennett and Lieutenant Montmorency. Private Byrne and Captain Neville Smith were awarded the Victoria Cross for conspicuous bravery at the Battle of Omdurman. Many minor decorations and promotions are also gazetted. Rear-Admiral Noel, Commander of the British fleet in Cretan waters, is made a K.C.M.G.

Count Stolberg Wernigerode, Captain of the 15th Regiment of the German Uhlans, has been sentenced to 40 months' imprisonment and dismissed from the army for killing Sergeant Steinhardt, quartermaster of the regiment. During the late manoeuvres in Alsace the army cooks spoiled some food. The Count called Steinhardt to account for this and Steinhardt excused himself by stating that he was absent foraging. The Count, after abusing him, drew his sword and cut Steinhardt on the leg and head. Steinhardt died without recovering consciousness.
