The calendar for the criminal sessions which open on Monday is lighter than usual; but it contains the names of ten prisoners, aud the charges include two of attempted murder. The barque Freeman, 120 days from New York, has arrived. The captain reports that the ship experienced stormy weather the whole voyage, and gale succeeded gale with monotonous regularity. Only some slight damage was done to the deck fittings. It is understood that Capt. McLean, who was in command of the Mapourika at the time of the wreck, has senc in 1113 resignation
The Court of Appeal was occupied today hearing a charge brought by the Southland District Law Society against J. S. Newe, solicitor, practising at Gore, of inserting certain unauthorised words in a bill of sale. After hearing the evidence the court suspended the defendaut for six months.
Greymouth, Last Night,
The operations on the Mopourika are going slowly but steadily on. Yesterday the vessel was lifted 16 inches with appliances equal to 2000 tons lifting power, but further apparatus has been sent for.
