PIRONGIA.
Waikato Mounted Rifles.—The 2nd Waikato Mounted Infantry Corps were inspected and drilled here on Thursday afternoon, by Colonel Banks and Capt. Reid. Forty members were present on parade. Captain Reid proved the company, after which the corps was marched to Mr George Miles' paddock, and instructed in various movements. The result was most satisfactory for a newcorps. The horses were, although somewhat mixed, of a good description, useful, and many shewed good breeding. At the conclusion of the drill, the Colonel expressed his satisfaction with the corps. In the evening the corps again met- for foot drill iu the Public Hall, 42 members of the corps being present, with their rifles, which had been handed over to them between the lustration was given by Captain Reid, and good progress made, Colonel Banks also being present. At the conclusion of the drill, the Colonel congratulated the officers and men on their muster, which he hoped would be increased. Lieut. Aubiu then addressed the men and informed them that a captain of the company would have lo be appointed, and proposed Mr \V, H. Grant for their offber. ' The applause was loud and long at the proposal. Mr Grant was unanimously elected, and briefly returned thanks for the honour that the corps had done him. The Colonel then chose the following men of the corps as non-commissioned oth'cers : Sergtant-iMajor, G. Berry ; Sergeants, J. M. Singleton, B. Parkington, H. Thorpe and Bainbridge ; Corporals, A. Reunie, S. Lewis and D. Rollo ; Sergeant-Farrier, Miles ; bugler, Conn.—(Own Correspondent).
