MAORI WITCHCRAFT.
ALLEGED DEATHS FROM MAKUTU.. (liY TELEGRAPH—PEESS ASSOCIATION). Taubasga. Last Night. On Saturday Sergb. Murray received a telegram from the constable stationed at Katikati that he was proceeding to Matakana to arrest a half-caste named Murray, who is alleged to have committed an assault on Tercre Tawaha, the outcome of the latter's alleged confession to Ehau that he had caused the death of a native by makutu. Murray's wife, a daughter of the chief Wi Kepa, died some few. weeks ago, her death being attributed to witchcraft. Terero Tawaha is the individual who some years ago sued another native for saying he was an evil tohunga. Another death occurred here on Friday amongst the natives. A half-caste named Taraoa, about 20 years of age, of the Ngatipukenga tribe, died, and his death is attributed to makutu, owing, it is alleged, to his having stolen a pig from Hairimi. another native.
