THE MELBOURNE CUP. This race was rim on Tuesday, and re ■ suited as follows : Mr W. Forrester's br g The Grafter, syrs, by Gozo—lndustry, 9st 21b (J. Gough) 1 Meßsrs W. and C. Wilson's b h Wait-a-Bit, syrs, by Malua—Luciaa, Sst {F Fielder) 2 Mr W. Bailey's eh c Cocos, 3yrs, by Abercorn—Copra, 7st 101 b (W. Delaney) * THE RACL. The first to break the line when the barrier was released were Thunder Queen and The Grafter, this pair showing the way to Eleusive, Plutus, Battalion, Merloolas, Relic and Syerla. Entering the course proper Thunder Queen held the command from Eleusive, Plutus, Battalion, Merloolas, Relic, The Gratter, Cordite, Contrast, Manfred and .Syerla, whilst Pelissier brought up the rear. Passing the stand Battalion was in front, Eleusive, pulling double, next, when there was a general bunch, prominent among whom were Relic, The Grafter, The Chief, Manfred, Cordite, Wait-a-Bit, Longford, Contrast and Amberite. Turning out of the straight "War God ran up to the leaders, comprising Battalion, Relic, Thunder Queen, Mischief, Eleusive, Toxteth, Manfred, Clarion, April Fool, Cocos, Dreamland, Syerla, Holster and Cordito, with Merloolas dropping back to the rear. At the mile-post War God had two lengths lead of Battalion, whose nearest attendants were Relic, Thunder Queen, Mischief, Toxteth, Manfred, The Grafter, The Chief, and Cocos. Along the back Relic ran up second, the stable companions, The Chief and The Grafter, being third and fourth, closely pursued by Thunder Queen, Manfred, Toxteth, and Massiuissa. The positions of the leading pair were unchanged in sweeping down to the entrance to the straight, rounding which War God, whose victory was loudly proclaimed, showed out clear of Relic, after whom •time Thunder Queen, The Grafter, Mischief, Amberite, Cocos, Wait-a-Bit, and Massinissa. Once fairly in the straight War God aud Relic had yielded the pride of place to Cocos, who shot up next the rails, whilst The Grafter, in the centre of the course, likewise threatened much danger. Suddenly Wait-a-Bit appeared on the scene with a mighty rush, Fielder making an unfortunate mistake in attempting to come up between Cocos and The Grafter. This blunder undoubtedly lost him the race, as The Grafter, struggling on, managed to last long enough to secure the victory by half-a-ueck, Cocos finishing three-quarters of a length behind Wait-a-Bit ; War God, two lengths further back, being fourth, The Chief fifth, then Plutus, Thunder Queen, Amberite, Toxteth, Mischief, Battalion, Clarion, Massinissa, Eleusive, and Longford, the last to pass the post being Holster, Cordite, Pelissier, April Fool, Dreamland and Contrast. Time, 3m. 29|s.
