Mutual Improvement Socikty.—On Wednesday evening, October 19th, Mr Hibbs read a very interesting paper entitled " Intellect and Education v. Christianity." The writer dealt at some length with the subject, lillustratiug the advanced state of culture in Greece up to the time of St. Paul, describing the various schools of thought of those celebrated philosophers and statesmen, whose- record has been preserved and the high attainments in classic art, the sense of the beautiful, and the many varied works of art that have beenhanded down to us. But in spite of all this evidence of culture, many of their great thinkers even then had proclaimed corruption and decay was at hand. The lecturer then spoke of St. Paul's celebrated visit, and the elevating influence of Christianity in all its relations to human life and happiness which followed, giving many illustrations to that end. The paper was very ably criticised by Messrs Henry, La Trobe, Williams, Rastrick, Schnackenberg, A. L. Pegler and by the Chairman (Mr J. N. Pegler). A social in connection with the Society will take place in the Public Hall, Raglan, on Friday evening, November 4th.— (Own Correspondent).
