PATERANGI.

Lkctuke.—On Thursday last the Rev. Walter Smith, of TeAvvamutu, delivered a lecture on "Chat-lea Dickeus," the novelist, before the Mutual Improvement Society. There was a fair attendance, upwards of forty people being present, who certainly enjoyed the evening. Mr Smith read from manuscript, and gave a short sketch of the novelist's early career aud his many trials and perplexities aud his subsequent triumph. He pointed to the great amount of good which must have resulted by the novelist's exposure of many vices which existed and were brought out in the various characters throughout the long list of Dickens' novels. In conclusion the rev. lecturer gave a humorous reading from Pickwick, •'Bob Sawyer's Party," and also a patlietic one "The Death of Little Nell." A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Smith for his kindness and the trouble he took in walking from Te Awamutu to give us such a treat.—(Own Correspondent).
