A heavy gale was blowing at the time, and the vessel sank within 20 minutes. Eighty-six of the crew and passengers were drowned. Thirty-one passengers and 16 of the crew were saved. October 16. The Mohegan's crew acted nobly. Captain Griffiths, who was Commodore of the Atlantic Transport Co., perished at his post. The night was pitch dark. Most of the Kfeboats rendered useful service.
