AUCKLAND NEWS.
(BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION). Auckland, Last Night. On Saturday night the police made a raid on a boarding-house in Wyndhimstreet, Auckland, kept by Thomas Quni. They burst into a room and arrested the proprietor and eight Europeans under the provisions of the Gaming Act, IS9I. Action was taken on a search warrant issued on the sworn information of Detective Maddern. Some packs of cards were found up the chimney and in the grate, and small change was found on the floor. At the Police Court this morning Thomas Quoi was charged with keeping a common gamine; house. The case was adjourned for a week. The eight Europeans in the case were then charged with being found, without lawful excuse, in a common gaining house. They pleaded guilty. Detective Grace asked that sentence might be deferred until next Monday, when the principal offender would be tried. The accused were remanded accordingly. Mr 11. Romanus, a native of France, has commenced a local industry in the preparation of maccaroni, after making a variety of experiments. The Waitekauii Company crushed 1790 tons of stone for bullion valued at £6036, being an average of £3 7s per ton, which is a record yield.
