FIRE AT CAMBRIDGE.

About 9 o'clock on Tuesday evening Mrs McDermott was coming up Duke-street, Cambridge, when she noticed a large light in Mr C. Craig's tailor's shop. She thought it was an unusual occurrence, and upon investigating further she found the back part of the premises were in flames. She quickly gave an alarm, and fortunately many willing helpers wers close at hand and the lire was extinguished, after a hard tight, before it had gained a firm hold. The whole of the fittings and material were removed from the shop, but the machines and tools in the working-room were a'l more or less damaged. We understand the stock is covered to the extent of £2OO in the Commercial Union Office. Mr Craig was in tied at the time the fire started. He resides in Bryce-street, so the fire was virtually over before he heard anything about it. It i« supposed a spark from one ot the irons must have been smouldering at the time the premises were closed at 6 p.m., but nothing was then noticed. As we above stated, there were many willing helpers, but two (Messrs Weatherill and Fraser) are deserving of special mention, for they did yeoman service in extinguishing the lire. But for the wind lulling about that time the whole of the southern side of Dukestreet would most probably have again been swept by the devouring clement.
