HAMILTON PUBLIC LIBRARY.

A meeting of the committee of the Hamilton Public Library was held in the Borough Council Chambers last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor Mr Dey (in the chair), Messrs Bradley, Parr, YoiiDg, Edgecumbe, Coates, Stevens, and Barton (secretary.) The Chairman reported that he had interviewed Mr Currie, architect, in accordance with the resolution passed at the last meeting, but Mr Currie had explained that he was at present too busy to undertake the work of preparing plans for the work. Mr Stevens reported that the net result of the late entertainment was the handsome sum of £lB 12s 3d. This satisfactory return was entirely due to the exertions of the ladies' committee and to the generous manner in which the committee had been met by the residents in the Borough and vicinity. The Chairman then moved a hearty vote of thanks to the Ladies' Committee —Mesdames Furze, Slade, Stevens and Barufih, and the Misses Carey and A. Jolly. This was seconded by Mr Edgecumbe and carried by acclamation. Mr Stevens further reported that Mr Gresham, of Te Awamutu, had very kindly offered to give an entertainment on the first night of the Show on behalf of the library funds. Mr Young moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded Mr Gresham and his company for their generous offer. This was seconded by Mr Bradley and carried.

The Secretary was instructed to write Mr Greshiim and thank him in terms of the resolution. Mr Stevens then informed the committee that, in order to save unnecessary delay, he had seen Mr Coyle and had got him to prepare a plan of the proposed building, which he laid upon the table. The building has a frontage to Victoria-street of 31fr. by a depth of 24ft., providing a reading-room 24ft. x 12fc, a museum 12ft. x 32ft., and a library 17ft. x 12ft, and estimated to cost under £2OO.

After the plan had been inspected and approved of, Mr Stevens moved that the Secretary be instructed to forward the plan, etc., to the Hamilton Borough Council for approval, with the request that tenders be called for the erection of the building in accordance therewith.

This was seconded by Mr Young and caaried.

Mr Edgeeumbe moved that the Chairman, Secretary, and Messrs Stevens and Young be appointed a committee to supervise the plan aud specification before submitting them to the Council. This was seconded by Mr Parr and carried. This concluded the business.
