PUBLIC HALL FOR HAMILTON.

♦ TO THE KDITOE. Sir, —I am pleased to see that there is a movement towards getticg a Public Hall for Hamilton, and I am convinced that a convenient building, arranged to suit local requirements, would return a good rate of interest on the capital invested. The Volunteer Hall is well situated and might, with small expenditure, be made into a useful, if not beautiful, building, but the military authorities put it up only as a drill-shed, and naturally object to spend money in order to suit the convenience of the genera! public. At the same time one would imagine, seeing it used night after night for concerts, balls, etc., that it must pay very haudsomely, and even a Government to whom " mouey is no object" might see their way to spend some of the surplus income on much-needed improvements. I understand that the officer commanding the district has stated that if any other Hall were available he would not allow the drill-shed to be used for public purposes, so that if we decide to build a new one we need not fear competition in that quarter. Messrs Nathan and Co, are about to build a new hotel, and have secured a much larger frontage than they formerly possessed, so that it might be worth while to ascertain whether they would be willing to give a site, and in that case I have very little doubt that the money could be raised for the building by the issue of debentures, as was done in Te Awanuitu.—l am, etc., ,Jk Showml^
