WELLINGTON NEWS.
(BY TELEGRAPH--PRESS ASSOCIATION'). Wellington, Last Night. The Anti-Gambling League has passed the- following resolution:—" Tfiat this League niters its solemn protest against the action of the Legislative Council in deleting the machinery clauses (three) of the Gaming and Lotteries Bill, thereby rendering the Bill useless, and the League further respectfully urges the Hon. W. C. Walker to frame such pre visions as will make the Bill an efficient instrument for eradicating a growing evil that is inimical to the best interests of the community." When the resolution was presented to him Mr Walker said he very much regretted that the Upper House had deleted the clauses referred to. He was in full sympathy with the object of the resolution, and would be prepared, as far as he could, to see that a provision was put into the Bill, so that it might meet the requirements for which it was passed The Petone Rifle Club will be represented at the Federal Meeting in Sydney by W. H. Ballineer and Jas. Wilson. It is expected sufficient men will go from New Zealand to form a team to represent this colony in the Australian Cup match. Mr George Fisher, M.H.R., has decided to become a candidate for the Mayoralty of Wellington. It is understood that Mr J. R. Blair will seek reelection. Webber's Cycle Factory was almost totally destroyed by fire last night, aud the premises of Glennon (bootmaker), and Arnott and Scarbrook (ironmongers), were partially destroyed. The damages were :—Glennon, £250, no insurance ; Webber, £390 insurance, loss £6OO ; Arnott and Scarbrook loss on buildings considerable, covered by insurance : damage to stock, £3OO, no insurance.
