THE SOUDAN.
FASHODA TO BE RETAINED. FRENCH PRESS ASSERTIVE. (EY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH. COPYRIGHT). London, October 1. The despatches of General Kitchener dealing with the operations of the Anglo-Egyptian forces in the Soudan have been published. They state that the Khalifa's army has been completely annihilated and Mahdism extinguished, while the whole country has submitted. General Kitchener adds that tast territories have been re-opened to peace and good government. Lieutenant E. D. Loch, a son of Lord Loch, is mentioned in the despatches. The Queen's congratulations to General Kitchener and the army are also mentioned in the Gazette, and mention is made of the re-conquest of the Nile Valley to Sobat, which is interpreted to mean the retention of Fashoda. Cairo, September 30. Captain Marchand arrived at Fashoda in July. He had little food, and would soon have been obliged to quit the town but for General Kitchener supplying him with food, etc. Paris, October 1. The Paris newspapers claiming Fashoda are adopting a bolder tone.
