NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above Board was held at the office, Okete, on Wednesday. Present: Messrs Corboy (chairman), Bycroft, Washer, Fullerton and Shepherd. In the absence of the clerk, through illness, Mr Shepherd took his place.
Subsidy.—A communication was received from the Treasury, notifying the payment of £24 ISs lid to the Board's credit at the Bank of N.Z., Hamilton.
Mr Orbell's Valuation.—A memo, was received from the Valuer-General re the application made by tke Supervising Valuer at the last meeting to reduce the valuation of Mr Orbell's property. —It was decided that, having received the particulars asked for from the Valuer-Ueneral, the required alteration in the roll be made.—Mr Fullerton objected, on the ground that such a heavy reduction as that proposed, viz., from £IOOO to £GJS, as representing the capital value of 1236 acres, seemed a most irregular proceeding, especially coming so soon after the sittinc of the Assessment Court, and savored strongly of private influence in official quarters. Bala>*ce-siieet.—The balance-sheet was received from the Audit office, certified as correct. Outstanding Rates.—The clerk sent in a list of arrears of rates collected through the Board's solicitor, some £22 17s 8d beimr paid in.—With respect to other cases, still outstanding, it was decided that the collector take immediate steps to recover all rates due.
Valuation Roll.—The following application, to have alterations made in the valuation roll, were received and granted :—Sections'2l7, 218, 122, Pukete, from W. Perkins to H. Poynter ; section 41, Horotiu, from tf. J. Croft to Butler Ikos. ; and section 210, Pukete, from native owners to \V. Perkins.
Rate.—ln terms of the Board's notification, it was decided that a rate of ;J-d in the £ be struck on all the rateable property in the Newcastle Road District.
Pirns.—Mr Bycroft reported that he had inspected the set of pipes put in by Mr Robert Fleming, at Pukete, and considered that full payment had been made by the Board for the work.- Report adopted.—The Chairman brought up the need for a set of pipes to enable Mr Fullertou to cross the road drain near his property, Mr Fullertou offering to put them in free of charge.—lt was decided to procure the pipes. Roads.—Mr E. de C. Drury waited on the Board, and submitted a draft of charges for survey work in connection with the proposed closiug and opening of new roads, the total amounting to £l7 10s.—It was decided to accept Mr Drury's offer, the work to be started forthwith.
Accounts. —The following accounts were passed and cheques issued :—James Wathen, 7s Od ; W. and J. Walsh, £ll 14s ; Valuer-General's office, £1 Ss ; A. F. Wilcock, £5 ISs 9d ; J. S. Bond, 9s.
