STORM AT BARBADOES.
DISASTROUS TIDAL WAVE. FORTY THOUSAND HOMELESS. VESSELS ASHORE. KINGSTON T 0 T ALLY DESTROYED. THREE HUNDRED INHABITANTS PERISH. (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPYRIGHT). London, September 15. ARkuter's despatch reports that, by a great hurricane atßarbadoes, 40,000 people have been rendered homeless, and 200 killed. The damage is estimated at £250,000. (Received September 16, 1120 a.m.) . London, September 15. In connection with the hurricane in the West Indies, a tidal wave swept over a portion of the island of St. Lucia. Cocoa estates were devastated, and landslips were frequent. Three large vessels are ashore at Kingston, the capital of the island of St. Vincent. The wave was accompanied by a terrific hurricane, and the town was totally destroyed. Three hundred inhabitants perished, and the number homeless is now said to be 20,000. At Guadaloupe the hurricane was very severe, and there were many landslips. Twenty persons were killed. (Received September 16, 10.40 p.m.) London, September 16. Excepting Jamaica, all the islands in the West Indies suffered by the hurricane, many of them cruelly. The Governors are appealing for assistance from the English people. The warship Alert, at the Barbadoes, escaped gsing ashore by steaming out to sea.
The telegraph Hues and cables were injured and uiauy churches were wrecked.
