CHARGE AGAINST A SCHOOL TEACHER AT CAMBRIDGE WEST.

TO THE EDITOR. StR, —I notice in your issue of 10th inst. a letter from Dr. Murdoch, of Cambridge, referring to your report of the charge against a school teacher at Cambridge West. The doctor states that, in your report of the meeting, some doubt occurs as to the treatment adopted by Mr and Miss Dean, and that, after doing their very best, as far as it went, they got nothing but abuse for it. " after all, not very uncommon in this world." Since reading the above in your paper I have again read over your report of the meeting, as it appeared in the Argus of 6th inst., and not one word can 1 discover that can, in any way, be construed into such a meaning. As chairman of the meeting I took note 3 of the evidence all through the case, and the only witness who mentioned Mrs and Miss Dean's name was Mr Hickey, and he stated in his evidence no one could have been kinder or more attentive during his boy's' illness than those two ladies. Now, sir, where does the abuse come in, as there is no word of it in your report, and no word of abuse, in any shape or form, was made use of at the meeting? The only way to account for it is, some very meddling busybody must have told the doctor a 'deliberate lie as to what actually did take place, to try to bring discredit on the people of Cambridge West. I do not blame the doctor in the least, as, no doubt, he wrote the letter with the best intentions, only, unfortunately, his informant led him altogether astray, and let me advise his informant, for the future, " to let well alone," and not attempt to drag the matter any further through the mud, as some uncharitable persons are apt to say where there is so much smoke there may be a little fire. —I am, &c, Edwd. Allen. September 12th, IS9B.
