Regarding the military tournament, for which valuable prizes will be given, entries from all parts of New Zealand are .expected. The sports committee and the local military committee are to arrange the details. At a meeting of the council of the Chamber of Commerce it was decided to write to the southern Chambers of Commerce with a view to securing their cooperation in regard to amending the present system of payment for telegrams. The Secretary reported he had interviewed the Northern Steamship Company with regard to direct steam communication with Patea, and had been informed that it would be impossible to put a steamer on this trade. Mr Theo. Cooper, solicitor, on behalf of the temperance party, is examining into the ease of the decision of the Licensing Committee re extension of hours of opening till 11 p.m., as decided at the quarterly meeting on Tuesday.
