WAIKATO MOUNTED RIFLES, NO. 2.
A meeting of the Volunteers for the proposed new Waikato Mounted Rifles, No. 2, took place in the Public Hall, Pirongia, on Tuesday evening last, (Japtains Grant and Keid attending oil the part of the Government to swear in and enroll the members. Mr W.lf. (want was called to the chair, and in a brief speech introduced Captains Grant and Keid to the meeting. .Captain Grant then fully explained the duties and responsibilities of a Volunteer. He theu called upon chose who intended to join the corps to come forward and be formally enrolled. Thirty-three of those piesent then presented themselves and were duly euro.led by Captain Giant, assisted by Captain Keid. CaDtain Keid called upon the men to elect their officers, the non-commis-sioned officers he explained would have to be appointed at the next meeting. Mr \V. H. Giant proposed that Mr Eugene H. Aubiu be elected as Lieutenant to the corps. Seconded by Private Berry and carried unanimously. Private E. Partington next proposed that Mr Joseph Hodgson be elected us second Lieutenant to the corps. .Seconded by Private &. Conn and cariied unanimously. Lieutenant Aubin then proposed that the Rev. Mr Kyall be appointed the chaplain of the corps. (Cheers). The Rev. Mr Kyall thanked those present for electing him to the office. He had always taken great interest in volunteers and volunteering. They might depend upon him doing his utmost to forward its interests and congratulated them on forming the corps. Lieutenant Aubiu then announced that the commencement of drill would take place in about a fortnight, of which they would receive due notice. Captain Grant explained that the corps had already been gazetted as the Waikato Mounted Rifles, No, 2, and that ten more members would require to be enrolled before their arms could be issued to them. The rifles to be supplied to them were already in store in Auckland. They were the Lee-Enfield rifle, and a splendid weapon, he thought, when he inspected them. The roll would be left with Lieutenant Aubin, so that the members not present that evening, could sign and be sworn in in the presence of one of the Lieutenants and a Justice of the Peace. Captain Reid proposed a vote of thanks to the chairman. Seconded by Captain Grant, which was carried unanimously. This concluded the meeting, the number required to fill up the number requisite, will soon be made up, as there were many unavoidably abseut.—(Own Correspondent).
