INTERPROVINCIAL.

(BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION"). Wellington, Last Night. Capt. Edwin says there are strong indications that northerly gales will be experienced in most parts of the colony between noon of Sunday and midnight on Monday. Ninety-eight applications have been received from all parts of the world for the position of Wellington city engineer at a salary of £BOO. The applications are to be referred to a committee for selection. At the quarterly meeting of the Licensing Committee to-day, a report was read from the police, complaiuing of the alarm-bell which was in use at the Ranfurly Hotel. The report stated that, ow account of this means of signalling, the police could not gain admittance to the hotel without the occupants being made aware of their approach. Mr Skerrett, who appeareil for the licensee, Crossey, denied the jurisdiction of the committee to go into the matter at a quarterly meeting. He deprecated hotelkeepers being harassed in this manner, and contended that the proper course would nave been for the police to lay an information and attempt to prove their accusations. The bell had been removed as soon as Crossey knew it was objected to. Mr Kenny said there was no application before the committee with regard to the license and he did not see the committee could do anything. At the same time he thanked the police for making the report. Christchhrch, Last Night. The Sawyers Arms Hotel at Papanui, owned and occupied by Mr Cooper, was destroyed by fire.
