TE AWAMUTU.

Mutual Improvement Society'.—The usual fortnightly meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society was held in the reading-room on Thursday evening. There was a fair attendance. TheiSeccetary reported that 21 members on the roll had paid their subscription. The opening entertainment held in the Town Hall had just cleared expenses, so that the Society was in credit. There seemed to be a lack of interest taken in the Society, judging by the attendances. The evening was chiefly occupied by selections from the works of Tom Hood, by Mr Culver. Mr Vause and Mr S. Lewis also gave short readings, which were much appreciated. The next meeting takes place early in September, when Mr King, of Rangiaohia, will lecture on "Napoleon." Libkaky.—The Pirongia Minstrels have kindly promised Mr Vause, Chairman of the Library Committee, their assistance for the next entertainment on behalf of the funds, which will take place at an early date.

Social. —The social in aid of the Waikato West Parsonage Building Fund held last Friday evening passed off very successfully. There was a splendid attendance from all tho out-districts Songs were given by Mrs Andrew, Messrs Fell and Bathurst ; a recitation by Mr S. Lewis, and a violin solo by Miss Bowdeu, all of which were loudly applauded. A few dances were interspersed and light refreshments handed round. —(Own Correspondent).
