SOUTHPORT ELECTION.

London, August 25. The election of a Parliamentary representative for the Southport division of Lancashire, rendered necessary by the resignation of the Hon. G. N. Curzon, who has been appointed Viceroy of India, took place yesterday, and resulted in the return of Sir H. S. Nayler-Leylund, the Liberal candidate, who polled 5100, against 4S2S polled by the Conservative candidate, Lord Skeltnersdale. The contest had excited considerable local interest, and led to a split in tbe Unionist party. The Radical press is exultant at tbe result, and claims that it sounds the death knell of the Salisbury Government. At the last election the polling was as follows: Hon. G. N. Curzon (C.) ... 5163
Sir H. S. Naylor-Leylard (L.) 4399 On toe present occasion the Liberal vote lias increased by 701, wbile the Conservative vote has decreased by 335.
