RAGLAN.
Cot;jit.— There was a sitting of the Magistrate's Court on Monday, Messrs J. N, Pegler and W. M. Bankart, Justices, presiding. The civil case Lindsay Johnson v. W. J. Smith, Secretary of the Raglan Racing Club was dealt with. The action was to resover £3 10s, the amount of stake in the pony race, held on April 11th, IS9S, which was won by plaintiff's pony " Sam." The case was dismissed, on the grounds that under Clause 7 of the Gaming Act, 1896, the court had no jurisdiction. A native named laumata was charged with having stolen a coat value £2, the property of Henry Matthew, who deposed . that on August 6th he was at the Public Hall and placed his coat on the stage. He went out and, on his return to the hall, found that his coat was missing. The coat was traced to the accused, aud he was fined £3 or 14 days' imprisonment. Pay Day.—The annual payment of rent day for the Te Akau estate passed off very quietly, considering the large number of natives assembled. Obituary.—Only the other day there passed away, in the person of Mr King, of Waitetuna, another old and respected settler, he having reached above the age of three score years and ten. His remains were followed to the grave by his sons and numerous friends, the interment taking place in the Oketo cemetery, Mr La Trobe. lay reader, officiating. Had the weather been line a much larger gathering would have taken place. On Saturday a telegram was received from Ouelnmga, announcing the death ot Mrs Graham, another old settler in this district. Mrs Graham had resided in Auckland for some years back, though in the old days she was for many years a wellknown «nd much respected resident in Raglan. —(Own Correspondent.)
