The first steam trawler built in New Zealand, of '6O tons, was launched today. She is intended for the trawling trade at Napier, and is fitted with all appliances.
The Minister for Public Works has ordered 12 additional men to be put on the north end of the North Island Main Trunk Railway. Arthur Allen was found guilty at the Police Court of breaking two panes of glass, worth 40s, at Wm. Earl's restaurant. Mr Earl said this was the third time Allen had broken his window. He had received a letter a fortnight ago from the accused, in which the latter said: "I cannot possibly help myself when on drink. It will pay you to help me to leave Auckland. You can arrange a passage for me to Sydney or Wellington, Sydney preferred. I am sure you will never regret it." The Bench pointed out that Allen had been convicted on similar charges at Christchurch and Duuedin, and sentenced him to three months' hard labour. He is said to be well-connected in England. Some of the men who went on the co-operative works ou the Rotorua-Mamaku-Oxford Road are dissatisfied with the remuneration given by the Government. Several returned to town after being six weeks at work, earning £9 16s 7d per man.
