NGARUAWAHIA.

DEBATING Society.—The dramatic evening in connection with the above society came off on Friday, the Iflth inst. The weather was decidedly wet, but the attendance was good. Owing to the short time for rehearsal at the dinposal of the several performers and the small stage, it was decided to attempt something simple, and the result was the two little dramas, " A Rough Diamond " and "My Turn Next," were selected. " A Rough Diamond " was first put on. The characters were taken as follows : —Sir William Evergreen, Mr E. Rathborne ; L<idy Evergreen (the rough diamond), Miss M. Paterson ; Captain Blenheim, Mr Skelton ; Lord Plato, Mr F. Hunt j Lady Plato, Mrs W. Paterson : Cousin Joe, Mr E. Bailey. For amateurs all the characters were well taken, particularly the two most important ones of Lady Evergreen and Cousin Joe, and judging from the applause the efforts of the performers were much appreciated. "My Turn Next " was then staged, in which Mr T. W. Da vies appeared as Mr Taraxicum Twitters, Miss E. Hunt as Mrs Twitters, Mr G. Roper as Tim Bolus, Mr T. U. Wells as Tom Trap (a commercial traveller), Mr H. Burr as Farmer Wheatear, Miss Nelly Paterson as Peggy (the servant), and Miss Masefield as Cicely (sister of Mrs Twitters). Here again the performers were frequently "applauded. Mr A. J. Simmelhag and Mr Lloyd rendered valuable assistance in the get-up of the performers. The result of this evening shows that there is sufficient talent in the township to stage something more difficult if there were only a larger stage to put it on. If this were done it would add variety to our local entertainments, and would be a pleasant change from the customary concert. It is to be hoped that the new hall which has long been talked of and eagerly looked for will lie a thing of the near future, and that the Town Board will not now let the matter drop, .is the present building is a disgrace to the township.—(Own Correspondent).
