NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held at the otfice, Ohote, on Wednesday. Present : Messrs P. Corboy (chairman), Washer, Bycroft, Fullertou aud Shepherd. "Exchange or Roads. Re exchange of roads, Mr Geo Jack wrote agreeing to compensate the Board for any additional land he might acquire through the exchange of roads.—As several other works, requiring the services of Mr E. de C. Drury, surveyor, were about to be put iu hand, the matter was held over until the next meeting. Valuation.—Mr \V. Duncan, Chief Valuer, requested that the valuation of Section 160 Horotiu, be altered to £olS. —lt transpired that this lot, owned by Mr Orbell, comprised 1236 acres ; valued in the roll at £IOOO, and in the absence of fuller information, the Board decided that it was unable to accede to the request. Te Kowhai Road. The Chairman reported having visited the Te Kowhai Road, leading to Mr Skewes' farm and recommended fascines and clay over the worst place.—Mr Skewes having offered to do the work for £3, it was decided to accept the offer, provided that good fascines were used, and that Mr John Martin undertook to permit the traffic across his land. Maceedie's Road.—The chairman also brought up the necessity for some further improvements on Macredie's road, to cut about 3ft.—lt was decided to do the work, the matter being left in the hands of the chairman. • Mr J. B. Lane's Rates.-Mr J. B. Lane wrote enclosing some rates, and intimating that he had now no land in Whatawhata. Finance.—The clerk reported that out of some £126, rates pnd arrears due, some £55 had been collected, and some further cases—rather tough ones—were still in the hands of the Beard's solicitor. As the Board now found it necessary to borrow from the Bank to carry out needed works, owiug to so much rates being unpaid, it was decided that the collector have power to sue tor all overdue rates, whether current or arrears. — A resolution was passed that authority be given tor an overdraft at the 8.N.Z., Hamilton, for a sum not exceeding £IOO ; also, that Mr Shepherd sign cheques in conjunction with the chairman and clerk. Rate.—lt was decided to give notice of the intention to strike a rate of : t 'd in the £ on all the rateable property in the district. Accounts.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—l). Fullerton, £l2 4sßd; Government Auditor, £1 0a Sd.
