FOOTBALL

WAIKATO V. WAIPA. This afternoon the Waikato and Waipa football teams will meet on Sydney Square, and there is every prospect that the match will prove to be the game of the season. Wc have not seen any of the Waipa players perform this season, and it is a well-known fact that there are some old, experienced and sterling players in that district, but W 9 are inclined to favour the chances ot the Waikato contingent, Speight, who is chosen to represent Auckland against the Thames team at Potter's paddock to-day, leaves for Auckland this morning, and Dunn, of Huntly, and McVeagh, of Cambridge, are unable to play, and their places will be filled by Beere, Montgomery and T. Kirk. It is a matter for regret that Pyke is not plaTing for Waikato, as his inclusion would greatly strengthen the team, as he is, without doubt, the most brilliant man we have seen in this district for many a long day. It is not definitely known who will act as referee, but no doubt Mr Heather will be pressed into service, and he is undoubtedly a competent man. A small charge for admission to the Square in aid of the Union funds will be made, and as this is the first occasion on which the lovers of the game have been aaked to pay for their fun, it is to be hoped they will roll up in goodly numbers, Wc again suggest that the police should use their best endeavours to confine the public to the enclosure, in order that fair play may be meted out to both sides. Football appears to be booming in Hamilton, which now possesses no less than three teams —a first, a second, and another called the Rovers. A meeting of the two latter clubs was held at the Commercial Hotel on Thursday evening. There was a large attendance of intending members, lo was decided to form one club, to be called the Rovers. The first match will be against the two printing offices (combined) at an early date. The following officers were appointed :—Patron : His Worship the Mayor, Mr W. Dcy. President : Mr G. J. Mann. Vice-Presidents : Messrs O. Edgecumbe, J. S. Bond, W. Bright, T. Slade, and W. Preston. Captain : Mr E. Johnston. Deputy-captain : Mr H. Johnston. Hon. Sec. and Treasurer : Mr P. C. Carr. Management Committee : Messrs E. and H. Johimton, P. C. Carr, J. Devery, W. Hyde, W. Hope, and C. Holloway. The colours decided upon are navy blue with a white hoop. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr G. J. Mann for a donation of half-a* guinea towards the funds.
