MUNICIPAL ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE.

The Order Paper for- the Municipal Association Conference, which opens iu Wellington on Monday, contains a \-9ry large amount of business. Many amendments are proposed in the Rating Act and the Municipal Corporations Bill. In connection with fire -insurance, the following motions are to be considered :•—" That the principal of municipal lire insurance be advocated, and if it fads, Government be asked to pass legislation making it compulsory on insurance companies to contribute one-third of the cost of maintaining lire brigades." "That boroughs be allowed and empowered to affiliate and form en insurance union, and that the rate and amount of reserve fund be left to actuaries to determine." " That fire brigades be supported jointly by Government, borough council and insurance companies." Under the heading of "Miscellaneous" the following motions are set down for consideration : —" That Government should bring into operation a universal intercolonial law to treat all deserters of wives and children as fugitives; to make it an offence for any Chinese householder to harbour any European of immature age, any minor found on premises to bo prima facie evidence of harbouring." "That Government be requested to take immediate steps to open up new markets in and around the Pacific Ocean, West Australia, the Cape, and elsewhere."
