RECEPTION OF MR DUTHIE.
(by telegram—press association), Wellington, Sunday. A URGE public reception was tendered to Mr J. Duthie, M.H.R., in the Opera House last night, the welcome being on similar lines to that accorded to Captain Russell lust week. Captain Russell made a short speech, in the course of which (in referring to the policy of the Opposition) he said the party were not opposed to the munici* palisation of such works as local bodies could undertake better than private individuals, but they were strongly opposed to the harrassing and crushing out of private enterprise. The time had come when it was the duty of whatever Government was in power to settle people all over the land, and encourage, as fatas possible, industries springing up all over the country. Mr Duthie spoke at some length in acknowledging the address of welcome which wa.s preseuted to him. He said he thought the time was coming when the Opposition party would enter upon a campaign and stump the country in order to test the feeling of the people as to the contiuuance of the present Government regime. A great part of his speech was devoted to the recital of his experiences incidental to his trip. Mr Rolleston also spoke briefly. The meeting concluded with hearty cheers tor Mr Duthie,
