CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the above committee was held in the Borough Cnambers on Thursday evening, at 7.30 p.m. There were present: Messrs A. Bach (chairman), C. Boyce, J. Webber, F. J. Brooks, J. Ferguson.and Jas. Hally (lion, sec.) Inspector's Report.—The Inspector's report re the school inspection on 18th May last was read. It suggested several alterations in the organisation, but stated it was, perhaps, too late in the year to make them.—lt was considered satisfactory.—The Chairman said he interviewed Mr Petrie (the Inspector) when in town, and he (Mr Petrie) suggested the Board's architect should be asked to inspect the old school building, to decide if it should be repaired or removed. He (the chairman) had written the Board about it, but he had heard nothing further.—The average attendance of pupils for the past quarter was 182 8.

Holidays.—The head master wrote complaining of the number of holidays that had been granted. He suggested that the school excursion should be held on a Saturday, and also the school spbrts, and that the holiday usually granted for the chrysanthemum show should be abolished.—The Chairman agreed that ther3 were too many holidays.— With this the committee agreed, and it was resolved that the number of holidays in future be reduced as much as possible, the Friday's holiday at chrysanthemum show time to be abolished. ,

■ Cleaning.—Mrs L. Davies wrote, asking to have the cleaning of the school. She stated she was a widow with two small children.—lt was resolved to invite tenders for the cleaning for one year, tenders to bo returnable on the 21st instant. Messrs Hally and Brooks were appointed to draw up the specifications, and they, together with the chairman, were authorised to open and accept same.—lt was resolved to in future call tenders for this work annually. Drill. —A circular was received, from the Chairman of the Hamilton West School Committee, asking the committee to make arrangements for having military drill given to the children of the school ; and suggesting that Captain Reid be appointed to give the necessary instruction.—The Committee forwarded the suggestion ; but did not know where the funds to remunerate Captain Reid were to come from.—Received. , Inspectors.—The Eltham School Committee forwarded a petition to Parliament re altering the inspectorial staff of the schools of the colony, which they asked the committee to support.—Received.

Accounts. The following accounts were passed for payment :—John Armer, 10s ; S. Harker, os ; W. Souter and Co., 10s ;J. Ferguson, lis ;J. S. Bond, £1 13s 2d ; J. R. Gray, 4s lid. School Stationery.—lt was pointed out that tenders had not lately been called for the supply of school stationery. —lt was resolved to look further into this matter.
