FIRE BRIGADE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —With your permission, I wish to insert a few lines in your paper with regard to the fire in Cambridge on Friday night, the circumstances of which are painful to think, of. Is it not frightful that any morning we may hear of people burnt in their beds, and no end of property destroyed from the want of any preparation to extinguish fire. We have a Mayor, we have Councillors. Town Boards, etc., and yet no one energetic enough to propound and carry out any scheme for lessening these calamities ; is it that our town magnates live in their own well-insured residences safely away from their neighbours, and in consequence prefer expenditure on more showy objects. In reference to the fire which occurred so recently, if there had been a high wind where would the whole street have been ? As it was the next buildings were in jeopardy, and were only saved by the great exertions of the kindhearted and generous public, many of whom may be still suffering from their UDUsual labour in the night air. The next fire probably will burn half the town down, so we must entreat the authorities before any other improvements be added to this fair little town to do their utmost to start as soon as possible an engine and fire brigade. Let it not be said of us that human lives and the sorrows of poverty are of less value than bicycle tracks, handsome trees, etc.—l am, etc., HEN HI ETTA JjADHAJI.
