Wellington, Last Night. Thk Sydney Belle, which has been charteied by Miss Hastie, for an exploring expedition in the Pacific, arrived today. Miss Hastie is a lady of considerable means, and an enthusiastic amateur scientist, and the whole expedition will be under her personal direction. The cruise is expected to extend over eight or nins months, and it is proposed to undertake nearly every ordinary branch of scientific research. Conchology will not be neglected, and a lady named Miss Prince will accompany the party as botanist. Mr C. S. Wedenby will take observation* in the meteorological department, and, being also an anthropologist, he hopes to obtain some interesting skeletons and other records. In addition to the ordinary scientific methods of investigation, the expedition is to take quite a novel departure. The party will take with them several most improved phonographs, with which it is intended to obtain records of native languages. Several of the latest photographic appliances for taking cinematographic pictures will also be among the apparatus. Mr Huddleston, formerly of the Mount Cnok Hermitage, is going as naturalist and collector. Altogether the party, without the captain of the vessel (Captain Warne) and crew, will numbei some 15 or 16 persons. The first portr of call will probably be the Rapa and Pitcairn Islands.
