WAIKATO MOUNTED INFANTRY.
The annual prize firing competitions in connection with the Waikato Mounted Infautry were held at the Range, on Tuesday, 24th May (Queen's Birthday). The weather was anything but favourable for the occasion, and while the firing at the 500 yards distance was going on, heavy rain fell, and this must surely have told heavily against the scoring. The distances fired at were 200, 300, 400 and 500 yards. During the afternoou Mrs Win. Bright paid a visit to the range, taking with her a bountiful luncheon, consisting of beer and sandwiches, which was throughly appreciated by the hungry volunteers, many of whom were looking forward to a long day without any dinner. Just about this time Captain Reid called his men to attention, and intimated that although no parade had been called for the purpose of firing a feu do joio, there was no reason why Her Most Gracious Majesty should not be honoured all the same. He called for three hearty cheers for the Queen, which were lustily given. The principal scores were as follows :
The cup presented by Mr G. J Mann for the highest aggregate score was wou by Capt. Reid, who also accounted for the company's belt, and tied with Vol. Garland for the Mann medal. However, in eounting o,ut, the medal was awarded to the latter, who had the smaller number of misses to his credit. Mr J. Gallagher's prize was won by Corp. Raynes. At the conclusion of the competition, votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Bright for her kindness in supplying lunoheon, and to Mr H. Tristram for the excellent manner in which he had kept the score register. Cheers were also given for the popular captain, whom we congratulate upon his success in winning the valuable Mann cup and the belt.
Owner wanted for a bicycle pump found in the neighbourhood of Hamilton. A lady's cravanette cloak and a fawn knitted shawl, lost between Paterangi and Harapipi, are advertised for. All the local bodies in the Waipa, "Waikato, Piako and Raglan Counties advertise in The Waikato Argus. Thia in itself, proves that the Argus is the best advertising medium. Mr E. Jones, the well-known saddler, etc., of Hamilton, Paeroa and Morrinsville, has a new advertisement in this issue, re the " Acrre " horse covers. The advantages possessed by these co/ers over those of the old style are fully enumerated in the advertisement, which will be found on our third page. " There can be two opinions about everything " but as " there is no rule without an exception, the exception proving the rule," there cannot be two opinions about The Waikato Argus having # the largest circulation of any paper in the four counties in which it circulates—viz., Waikato, Waipa, Piako and Raglan. The advertising public are fully alive to this fact, as the columns of the paper prove,
