RAGLAN.
o Assessment Court. —An Assessment Court was held at the Raglan Court House, on Tuesday, May 10th, Captain Jackson, S.M., presiding. Messrs Willis, Smith and La wry appeared as valuers for the various ridings :—Onewhero Road District, Onewhero Outlying District, Whangape Ridings, Waingaro Riding, Te Akau Riding, Karioi Riding, Karatnu Riding and Outlying District, Pirongia Riding and Kawhia. A long list of appealers was read over ; but as no one appeared in court, the valuations were sustained. Several objectors, previous to the sitting of the court, arranged with the several valuers, so did not appear. The business was soon concluded. Capt. Jackson returned to VVaikato on Wednesday morning. He is expected ever here the last week in June, to dispose of several court cases beyond the jurisdiction of the local Justices. Contracts. —At a meeting of the Finance and Works Committee of tho Raglan County Council on Wednesday the following tenders were accepted : Contract No. 53—Formation road Te Uku school: Catern and Shea, £4O 10a (accepted). No. 54—Repairs Waitetuna Bridge : N. King. £22 4s (accepted). No. 55 Metalling Waipa Road at Kenny's: Collins, £27 lO.s (accepted). No. 56 Formation Karioi Road at Litchfield's : Saunders, £42 16s (accepted). No. 57—Formation near Lascelles, Kauroa Road : Catern and Shea, £9 15s 6d ; metal, £5 (accepted). No. 58—Formation Kauroa Road at Billington's : Kendall, £25 10s (accepted). No, 59 Pakaka Road near Houchen's : Saunders, £26 (accepted). No. 60 — Pakaka Road, near Vernon's: Pegler, £2O (accepted). No. 61—Pakoka Road, near Norton's : Logan, £8 15s (accepted). In contract No. 56—Formation Kauroa Road near Litchfield's —the contract to be given subject to reduction of amount of work to agree with amount of Government grant issued. The Inspector of Works was instructed to cancel contract for gravel at Whata whata and substitute sand.—The Clerk was instructed to notify Mr C. E. McDonald that the Council intend to take a deviation through his land on Kauroa Road, near Okete ford. Mutual Improvement Society —A meeting of this society was he'd on Wednesday evening, Mr E. H. Schnackenberg being in the chair. A number of impromptu speeches were delivered by several members, the subjects being of a somewhat varied character, viz., 11 Should the Maoris be Taxed," " Riding Past, Present and Future," and "Land Settlement." Messrs Roffey, Hill, Pegler and Schnackenberg took part in the last discussion, which was eventually adjourned till next meeting.— (Own Correspondent).
