A subscription for a testimonial was also started. The identity of some of those missing from the steamer Maitiand has been established, hut it will be some time before anything like a correct list will be possible The Victorian Old Age Pensions Commission's draft report recommends that the necessary funds for peusions to de serving sexagenarians be obtained from taxes on earnings, on the unimproved value of land, house rents, and by a State tobacco monopoly. A scheme has been projected to exploit north and west Borneo on Rhodesian lines. A company, to be known as the London and Melbourne Chartered Company, purpose to negotiate for the cession of 40,000 square miles of territory. In the House of Commons Mr Chamberlain, in reply to Mr John Dillon, said, in the absence of information as to the recent speech made by Lord Ranfurly at Dunedin, New Zealand, upon Orangeism, he declined to institute inquiries. A total of 2619 bales of wool have been salvaged from the wreck of the Mataura. Operations are now suspended for the season. The death is announced of the Duke of St. Albans. Lord Newark has been elected unopposed for the vacaucy in the Newaik Division of Nottingham, caused by the retirement of Mr Finch Hatton, owing to ill-health. Mr Henderson (Unionist) has been elected hy a majority of 776 for West Stafford, replacing Mr Hanmr Bass, deceased.
